Keeping Swimming Safe

We are committed to making swimming enjoyable, fun and safe for all people. As a community, we have a responsibility to keeping each other safe – adults and children alike. The Safe Sport Framework confirms this responsibility, and outlines how we can achieve this as best we can. The Safe Sport Framework is an initiative of Swimming Australia, which is being adopted by all State Swimming Associations. It consolidates and replaces the previous Swimming Australia child and member welfare policies and codes of conduct. Because of this consolidation, we have a simple outline which can be easily applied to any situation. It’s been developed by a committee of experienced individuals from various Member Associations, in collaboration with the Australian Childhood Foundation and the Australian Sports Commission.

The Safe Sport Framework:

  • Specifically commits to keeping our Children and Young People safe within the sport
  • Clarifies and raises the standards of behaviour for dealing with Children and Young People through a new
  • Code of Conduct for dealing with Children and Young People
  • Combines previous role-specific Codes of Conduct into a single General Code of Conduct
  • Strengthens and clarifies processes and procedures when safe sport concerns or incidents arise
  • Requires more rigorous recruitment and screening procedures, as well as reporting by all organisations in swimming
  • Provides guidance, advice, tips and tools to assist us in keeping each other and our sport safe for all people.

The full Safe Sport Framework can be read on the Swimming Australia website, and we recommend everybody read over it and understand what the expectations and requirements now are. This is a critical step for upholding the positive influence swimming can have in our lives, and showing that we, as a community, take responsibility and are committed to the safety of our peers.
